Thursday seemed to be heading for another hot day, but there was a good breeze. It’s going to be Ronald Reagan and George Bush for the Republicans. After a night of reports that Reagan was negotia ting to make former President Gerald R. Ford his running mate word came at midnight that the deal had fallen through and George Bush would be the vice president nominee. "Bye, Bye Birdie" is tonight and Saturday night at 8 o’clock at the Fine Arts Center. The local AFS Chapter is conducting a fund drive to help send local students to foreign countries and to bring some of them here. The better we understand each other, the greater hope for peace in the world. Republicans To Meet The Polk County Republican Party has scheduled a meeting for Tuesday, July 22nd at 7 p.m. in the Agriculture Conference Room, Courthouse Annex, Co lumbus, to begin planning and working on its capmaign for the November elections. All Repub licans are invited. Owens Reunion The John Owens-Lindsey Ow ens Reunion will be held Sunday, July 20 at Harmon Field. Relatives will meet at the roundhouse at 1 p.m. Irvin Going To Gaffney Larry Irvin has resigned as teacher and coach at Polk Central to accept a position at Gaffney Junior High where he will serve as head junior varsity football coach. Mr Irvin is a native of Gaffney. At Polk Central he was assistant football coach, served as head girls basketball coach and varsity baseball coach. The annual Men's Day will be observed Sunday at 3 p.m. at Garrison Chapel Baptist Church The Rev R E. Dennis, pastor of the Cedar Grove Baptist Church. Simpsonville, S. C., will be the speaker Music will be presented by the Cedar Grove Men’s Chorus. Rev J W. Johnson, pastor said that the public is invited. Has Principal Role In Historical Drama Marianne Douglas FARMINGTON. PA., Mari anne Bailey Douglas, daughter of Mrs B. H. Douglas of Tryon, is portraying a principal role in the new outdoor historical drama, "Young Washington", which opened June 20 and will run through August 30. The play is in the new $1,700,000 amphitheatre named Great Meadows overlook ing the Fort Necessity National Battlefield, one mile from General Braddock's grave in Western Pennsylvania The play, written by Mark R Sumner, Director of the Institute of Outdoor Drama at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, requires a cast of 60 and tells of a young George Washington at the time of the French and Indian War. The Wednesday matinee opening performance audience was charmed, delighted and amused by the solid performance of the company of young performers staging their twelfth summer musical show. The achievement of company and the establishment of the grand ensemble captivates one as the youth of Tryon interpret in a fresh way Charles Stouse and Lee Adams’ musical comedy "Bye Bye Birdie.” It is the story of growing and the pain of change for individuals, family and society.
